ASL's Anti-Lip Solution! (Subtitled Version Added)

A response to David Kerr's inquiry for an anti-lip program to get ASL signers to not mouth English during signing. My simple solution: Use Water!

Very very clever solution to force ASL people to stop speaking, but at same time, I think it is bit gross and disgusing, don't you think? Maybe we can think of a better solution and not as gross or disgusting.

Oh gross! Ha ha ha ha! That's a good one!

Alas, I'm soooog guilty of mouthing words when I'm signing. This is a linguistic processing thing that happens to me as a former hearie. I became deaf at age 17, so my first language is spoken English. A habit hard to break.

I know the importance though of trying to turn off the unnecessary lip movements as it helps ASL become more clear. My Deaf ASL instructor as Gallaudet had his own solution to try to wean me off of the lip movements while signing. He forced me to hold a pencil sideways between my lips so I wouldn't be tempted to lip-sync the words while I signed. Oh man! That was tough! But I had a good sense of humor and went along with it.

Still, your point is well taken and I will try to be more aware of my own communication habits.

Gross (chuckle). How about caramel or Taffy sticky candies?

Mike,
You probably need some Neet hair removable cream for your lips so you won't be in pain when removing the duck tape next time.(chukcle)

LOL! Another sipper!!

Well, thanks for the idea!! I guess I'll start doing mine with tea everytime I make a vlog! ;)

deaf258, tea? hmm, i would advise against it. it's already bad enough drinking it as it will stain teeth. leaving tea in mouth will stain them even more. well, at least you will never open your mouth with tea in it, so maybe it doesn't matter what color your teeth would be, haha. (yes, just kidding).

I have such a bad habit of forming words with my mouth while signing. I grew up using SEE so it just comes naturally to me and when some of my hearing friends don't move their lips it makes it a bit hard for me to accurately read what they are trying to say because sometimes they are not as experienced when it comes to facial and body movements. With fluent ASL signers, I can usually understand them just fine without any English words being formed with the lips. So it really varies on what situation I am in. But myself, I do use my lips a lot. There's certain ASL signs that I just don't form words with my mouth because there's not really a specific English word for that sign.

One day I should experiment and see if I can make a whole day without forming English words with my mouth! My family would die though, they do rely a lot on my lips when I sign.
